The end of April brought the Lyrid Meteor shower to us and I went out to Death Valley National Park. It was a good time to see the meteors and the Milky Way with a new moon, and the location is obviously one of the best and closest places to see a dark sky near Las Vegas. There isn’t really much to get at night when it is a new moon in the way of landscape, so I had to either work with silhouettes or a headlamp light. The feature photo for this post is Natural Bridge in the southwest corner of the park and it was a shot of the Milky Way behind the silhouette of the bridge. The feature photo on the home page of the site is the bridge with a little artificial light from a headlamp and the Milky Way right above the canyon ridge.
The idea was to get out and get some shooting stars going through the shot… There were plenty of shooting stars, but they were faint for the most part and I didn’t get any shots of them. I did get to see Death Valley during the day for the first time. Definitely worth a trip back out in the winter or maybe for some lightening storms this summer. You can see more from this night out here on the portfolio page. And like all the work you see on here – and some photos I don’t have posted – you can contact me for purchase.
