I just got back from checking out the Super Bloom going on in Death Valley National Park just now and it was actually pretty kick ass. I have been to Death Valley a few times to check out the dark skies and I have never: 1) seen as many people there 2) witnessed the obvious color addition with the bloom – and this is across the board ….3) really cared about flowers before.
It is definitely worth the ride out there to see them. So, if you get the chance, go for it! I have heard about the flowers from some friends who have withessed it a few years ago, but I don’t think they got to see what is going on right now. The Park Services’ big centennial push this year just got a big boost by this rare bloom as well.
The main goal of the trip was just to do a first time backcountry camping trip for my buddy Oklahoma Slims who wanted to get his feet wet – in one of the dryest places on the planet. It was a quick 2 hour shot from Vegas and with the bloom going on, it was no brainer to let him test out a quick trip to an area outside the dunes to camp. I will be posting some photos from the trip on the site in a Death Valley gallery as well as some on social media.
